1712-1787 English By 1728 he had left Preston, and the following year he was working in London for the Flemish topographical and sporting painter Peter Tillemans. There he specialized in landscape painting and copying various works in Tillemans studio after Marco Ricci, Giovanni Paolo Panini and Jan van Bloemen. Devis earliest known commission, Hoghton Towers from Duxon Hill, Lancashire (1735; priv. col., see 1983 exh. cat., no. 3), painted for Sir Henry Hoghton during a trip to Preston in 1734-5, shows Tillemans influence in its attention to detail and the use of thin, transparent paint. Thomas Lister with his Family (c. 1738; Chicago, IL, A. Inst.) demonstrates a similar interest in landscape, featuring the family group in Gisburn Park, Lancs. Devis had returned to London by 1742 and established himself as a painter of conversation pieces, with a studio in Great Queen Street. Roger Hesketh with his Family is typical of his work at this time; it shows how Devis transformed the intimacy of a Dutch 17th-century genre scene into an elegant interior with the group of sitters connected by formal, schematic gestures. Roger Hesketh stands apart, in a tastefully contrived pose, his legs crossed and right arm thrust inside his waistcoat. His son, Fleetwood, stands with his hand resting on a dog next to his wife, who is seated with an infant on her lap. Akvarell är en målningsteknik där färgen läggs på i transparenta skikt på ett tjockt, lätt sugande papper. Papper av högsta kvalitet är syrafritt och framställt av bomullslump. Det kan variera kraftigt i olika vithetstoner och tjocklek. Ytans ytstruktur kallas gräng och finns av flera slag. Akvarellpapper levereras i block med limmade kanter runt om, så att papperet håller sig slätt, när det blir fuktigt av färgen. Lösa papper kan prepareras genom att fukta igenom det ordentligt med rent vatten och sen klistra/tejpa upp det på en styv skiva. När papperet torkat har inbyggda spänningar utjämnats, och det bubblar sig mindre, när akvarellfärgen läggs på. Akvarell målas ofta med en tjock pensel som kan hålla mycket vätska, samtidigt som den kan formas till en mycket fin spets. Den finaste kvaliteten görs av mårdhår eller sobelhår. Mycket smala linjer kan göras med hjälp av tunna spetsiga penslar eller dragstift, som egentligen är avsedda för för tuschritning. Gamla tiders stålpennor för bläck duger också för detta ändamål.
Max, Gabriel Cornelius von
Czechoslovakian, 1840-1915 Painter, illustrator and teacher, nephew of (1) Emanuel Max. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague (1855-8), and the Akademie der Bildenden K?nste, Vienna (1858-61), and under Karl Theodor von Piloty at the Akademie der Bildenden K?nste, Munich (1863/4-7). He settled in Munich, where he opened a private school of painting in 1869. His paintings and book illustrations of the second half of the 1860s show an affinity with the late Romanticist movement. He illustrated works of German literature by Wieland, Lenau and Schiller, as well as producing illustrations for Goethe's Faust (1867-8; Prague, N.G., Kinsky Palace). As well as literary and even musical sources, religious themes frequently occur in his work, including his first great success, the Crucifixion of St Julie (1867; ex-Sotheby's, London, 1976). In numerous female figures and portraits Max explored the tension between the inner state and the charm of the physical appearance or surroundings of his subjects. His interest in the artistic perception of relationships between physical reality and the spiritual world led him to a study of anthropology and contemporary occultism and mysticism, as in his portraits of the Seer of Prevorst
